Quakers and Business Co Clerks - Roland Carn and Elize Sakamoto

What is the "New workplace"?

British society has been, and is continuing to be, disrupted and drastically changed by Covid, by Brexit, by climate change and by the Ukrainian war. The changes are such things as loss of customers, loss of staff, collapse of supply chains, breakdown of just-in-time systems, increased remote working, reduced travel, changes in financial obligations and so on. Some businesses have collapsed, others have thrived, new business have sprung up to take advantage of the situation. Fraudsters and online criminals are having a bonanza.

In response, the conference will explore the challenges and opportunities opened up by these changes. In particular, the conference will explore effective alternatives to a dominant hierarchical organisation, and unethical practices.

Questions

  • What have we learned from academic studies and research and from direct practical experience of these crises?
  • What might be learned by Quakers and Business?
  • What can we make of these dynamics for rethinking our workplaces today?

Topics

We invite practitioners and researchers to join us in the ongoing dialogue re-examining our conventional business practices in the light of recent work and experience.

Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:

  • The governance rules and practices for the new workplace,
  • The role that constant change and uncertainty play in the new workplace,
  • Self-managed workplace teams in the emerging ethical climate,
  • Mitigating poor mental health in an ethical workplace,
  • Growing diversity in the ethical workplace strengthens our business,
  • Climate change and popular activism challenge our work and working practices.

The purpose of this conference is to enable and promote discussion among business people, seasoned and stimulated by academic thought and research on workplace practices and community building.

The core of Quakers and Business’s work is promoting ethical practices throughout a business, from boardroom to office or factory floor. Every business is unique, whether a multi-national company or a sole trader, but the personal relationships and the practice of working together are common to everyone.
Quakers and Business’s approach is rooted in the autonomous, self-managed way Quakers run their affairs and businesses. See The Quaker Business Method
